Kirk Whalum Has "Everything" |

Kirk Whalum drops his latest today [Aug. 31]. Everything Is Everything: The Music of Donny Hathaway [Rendezvous Music/Mack Avenue Reords] is the tenor saxophonist’s tribute to one of the great singers of all time. Every song on the project was either written or recorded by Hathaway; his daughter, Lalah, covers “You Had to Know,” while Musiq Soulchild tackles “We’re Still Friends.” For this project, Whalum mixed it up a bit, musically-speaking: “It’s the first time you’ll hear me with a chamber orchestra,” he says. And he admits he has a soft spot for one track in particular, “Je Vous Aime.” He told s2smagazine.com, “As I played, I thought both of how precious it is to have someone who loves you enough to ‘stand by your side,’ as my wife Ruby has done for me. When you sum up what it means to be ‘alive,’ it means family and community.” Whalum performs this weekend [Sept, 4] at the Detroit Jazz Festival, where Lalah Hathaway will join him.
